The 1-day tour to Pallay Punchu Rainbow Mountain is one of the best options for lovers of nature, living culture and trekking. It's also ideal for travelers who want to explore less crowded destinations.
It's an unforgettable tour: as you travel 3.5 hours from Cusco in a tourist vehicle with a professional guide on board, you'll pass through a beautiful valley full of picturesque villages and the inter-Andean and high-plateau landscapes typical of the Cusco region, where you can also see the daily life of the local people (Quechua speakers, descendants of the Inca Empire). Finally, you'll reach your main destination: the summit of Pallay Punchu mountain on Apu T'akllo Apacheta. To reach the Pallay Punchu viewpoint, at 4790 m a.s.l., you'll start a short uphill hike of about 2 km from the parking area, taking 1.5 hours at a slow pace. At the top, you'll enjoy a complete compendium of scenic beauty that words can't describe. On the way back to Cusco, we visit the archaeological site of Raqchi, the temple of the God Wiraqocha, built in the time of the Inca Empire.
The tour starts with pickup from your hotel between 4:30 and 5:00 a.m. We'll set off in private tourist transport toward the south of the region, along a route through high Andean landscapes, rural communities and imposing mountains. After a journey of approximately 3 and a half hours, we'll reach the district of Layo, in the province of Canas, where a traditional breakfast (highland bread, coca or muña tea, eggs and fruit) is served at a local restaurant. Here you can also acclimatize and get ready for the hike.
From Layo, we'll drive 30 more minutes to the area known as Sallani, the access point to Pallay Punchu Mountain. On arrival, we'll have a safety briefing, recommendations and free time to get ready. Then the climb on foot toward the mountain begins, above 4700 m a.s.l. The hike takes approximately 1 and a half to 2 hours, depending on the group's pace. Along the way, you'll see unique landscapes: high Andean wetlands (bofedales), small lakes, high Andean birds and views of Lake Langui.
At the summit of Apu T'acllo – Pallay Punchu Mountain, you'll witness the impressive natural spectacle of the rainbow mountain, whose multicolored folds form a pattern like an outstretched Andean poncho. Here you'll have free time to take photos, rest and connect with the energy of the Andean landscape. We'll then start the descent along the same trail to where the vehicle is waiting; this return walk takes approximately 1 hour.
Back in Layo, a typical lunch made with local ingredients will be served: quinoa soup, lamb or trout stew, native potatoes, rice and hot tea. After lunch and a short rest, we'll board the tourist vehicle to return to Cusco; the trip back takes about 3 and a half hours. We'll arrive in Cusco at approximately 18:00 and drop you off near the Plaza de Armas, wrapping up this unforgettable experience at one of the most amazing and least explored mountains in southern Peru.
It's in the district of Layo, province of Canas, approximately 168–194 km south of Cusco. Its altitude ranges between 4700 and 4791 m a.s.l.
It's called Pallay Punchu (or "Andean poncho") because of its colored stripes, which resemble traditional textiles; the name also refers to the myth of Apu Tacllo.
The difficulty level is moderate to demanding because of the altitude and slopes. We recommend acclimatizing in Cusco for at least 1 or 2 days before the tour, especially if you're coming from lower altitudes.
The suggested minimum is 12 to 15 years, depending on physical stamina and agency policy.
The dry season (April/May to October/November) is ideal: clear skies and stable trails. In the rainy season (November to March), the hike is harder, although the colors can become more intense after rain. Daytime temperatures are around 7–17 °C, and nighttime temperatures are close to 0 °C and even below freezing.
Yes, it's an excellent alternative to Vinicunca or Palcoyo, with fewer tourists and authentic natural landscapes. It's ideal for travelers looking for new, less crowded routes.
